Very often the solution is not in getting more facts but changing the frame of mind with which we see the facts. Lateral thinkers and those trained in creative subjects purposefully change their frame or perspective on a problem to come up with better solutions, faster. There are several decision-making tools that help us avoid this trap, and we’ll have a look at some in Chapters 8 and 9. Meanwhile, here are some tips to avoid the framing blooper.
Tips for tackling the framing blooper
• Acknowledge that there is always another frame of mind or perspective with which we can approach a problem. Our initial frame of mind may not be the only one or the best one.
• Sometimes we will be in an emotional frame of mind. If we are happy, excited or celebrating a victory, for example, we may not want to ask hard and cynical questions.
• In the same way, if everyone is excited about a project, it can be hard to draw attention to the negative aspects and ask what the potential pitfalls and losses could be.
• On the other hand, if we are optimistic or extrovert by nature, our approach or frame will tend to focus on the benefits and positive aspects of an issue.
• If we are pessimistic or cynical by nature, we will first explore the dangers and risks of a problem.
• Very often, it is hard for us to step out of our initial frame and take a holistic view of a problem. Changing the frame with which we view a problem is much like changing the channel on your TV. It must be done consciously, and we need to remember that one isn’t more important than the other.
Did you work out why we are welcomed by fresh fruits and veggies at the supermarket when we really should be allowed to pack heavy and bulky items in our shopping cart before shopping for mangos and mushrooms?
Because they smell fresh and healthy, the colours perk us up, and each one of our senses receives a riot of information. Our stomach learns that we are surrounded by good, fresh food, and this makes us want some. It puts us in a good frame of mind and makes it easier to part with our hard-earned cash. Definitely not something that shoe polish or shampoo would do for us!
